Mind’s Eye Observatory

The Grage Family - Ashley Rose, Terry, Cheryl, and Jack at Badlands Observatory

It’s always a treat to welcome guests to Badlands Observatory. And occasionally, they have observatories of their own!

Such was the case with the Grage Family, owners of Mind’s Eye Observatory in Sebastian, Florida. Mind’s Eye is a private astronomical and meteorological observatory.

Terry has found an ingenious way to overcome the limitations of the building code where he lives. Instead of a dome or roll-of roof, Terry has a roll-out trolley which holds his Losmandy G-11 mount and can accommodate several of his telescopes. Terry also builds his own computers and programs his drive system using open source software.

As one of Terry’s projects, he is providing satellite tracking data for use in the Master’s thesis of David Zuehike, student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Terry is also tracking NEO’s for the Minor Planet Center. A Citizen Scientist, Terry is open to new projects and expects to extend his public outreach activities in the near future.

Ron and Terry could have talked for days about their common interests which ran the gamut from music to aircraft with everything in between! Heard during the visit.. “it’s easy to have interests in common when you’re interested in everything.” AHA!
